New Android Malware Infections Highlight Staged Downloader Threat

Studies have shown that, in just the first half of 2011 alone, the growth of mobile malware, the increasing boldness and strategy behind the threats were beyond predictions, despite researchers claiming for years that each new year would be "the year of mobile malware".

As a follow up to the recently conducted in depth analysis of Apple's iOS and Google's Android platforms (noting their respective strengths and weaknesss), Symantec published a blog post investigating a staged download method used by two newly discovered Android threats, Android.Lightdd and Android.Jsmshider.

Symantec - One such strategy is to separate the malicious package into staged payloads. The idea is simple: instead of having one payload that carries all of the malicious code for any given attack, break the threat into separate modules that can be delivered independently. There are several advantages to deploying the threat in this way.
