NEC's "PaPeRo" Performs At "Life Innovation by Japan's Robot Technology" Exhibition

SINGAPORE, 25 September 2010 – As part of an exhibition themed “Life Innovation by Japan’s Robot Technology”, NEC’s famous robots - “PaPeRo” will be on showcase at the Japan Creative Centre (JCC) in Singapore, from 25 September – 8 October 2010. This exhibition features the recent development of robot technologies in Japan, where robots are used in our daily lives. Through this event, the JCC hopes to stimulate more interest about Japan, and introduce the charm of Japan to the Singapore visitors.

PaPeRo, an abbreviated name from Partner-type Personal Robot, is a prototype robot researched and developed by NEC Corporation since 1997, with the intention of it becoming a partner for human beings and it being able to live together with them. Thus, it was built with various basic functions such as image, speech recognition, intelligence, sensor and software platform technologies for the purpose of interacting with people. (see Annex for Facts & Figures of PaPeRo)

PaPeRo has been developed and used as childcare robots, and can also act as “monitoring agents” to care for the aged, because of its image recognition capabilities. PaPeRo was recently showcased at RetailTech Japan 2010 as a cashier, providing verbal guidance on how to scan merchandise at the checkout counter.
