MyRepublic, one of Singapore's fiber network service providers, has upgraded their GAMER package to 150Mbps recently. The fiber broadband package was first released in February this year with a speed cap of 100Mbps before it was bumped up.
Being the first provider to offer a low-latency fiber broadband plan for gamers here in Singapore, MyRepublic hopes that the increase in bandwidth would attract consumers active in online titles like World of Warcraft, Guild Wars 2 and Diablo 3 to sign-up with the gaming-dedicated broadband plan.
High latency and high packet loss manifest themselves in online gameplay by causing the game to "freeze" or become unresponsive. This noticeable lag has an adverse effect on a gamer's response time. To combat latency issues, MyRepublic has acquired some of the best routes to international destinations, mainly for destinations with major game or content servers. According to MyRepublic press release, the company has been constantly increasing its scope by purchasing new routes every quarter.
"Gamers predominantly are most concerned about latency and how much packet loss occurs over their connection to game server and back. Gamers using a run-of-the-mill broadband plan, and even broadband plans marketed as “gaming broadband” can often face high packet loss, higher latency or latency spikes that make their gaming experience undesirable. As regular gamers ourselves, we created the GAMER product to specifically meet gamers’ needs, with one-of-a-kind features like custom routing", said Lawrence Chan, MyRepublic’s GAMER product manager.
Besides its low-latency features, other benefits of the GAMER package include prioritization for gaming data, custom routing to overseas game servers (as mentioned), and a dedicated hotline for technical support. The GAMER package is available via MyRepublic at S$69 per month.
