MSI has continued to impress us with its stellar Twin Frozr V cooler, which manages to keep even beastly cards running that bit cooler than the competition. This time, it looks like its upping the ante with the GeForce GTX 980 Ti Sea Hawk, a hybrid card and the product of a collaboration with Corsair at the Tokyo Game Show 2015.

Corsair already offers a range of closed-loop liquid cooling solutions – for CPUs mostly – and the object of the partnership was to combine its expertise in closed-loop liquid cooling with MSI’s graphics card manufacturing technology.

In case you’re wondering, this isn’t actually the first custom GeForce GTX 980 Ti to use a hybrid cooling solution. The EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Ti Hybrid already combines air and liquid cooling, and the MSI card goes about it in a similar fashion.

However, the closed-loop cooling solution itself is actually a Corsair H55 CPU cooler, which features a low-profile aluminium radiator and a 120mm fan. The micro-fin copper base is in direct contact with the GPU die itself, while a ball-bearing fan delivers dedicated cooling to the memory and VRM components on the PCB.

The cooling shroud itself is a stealth black affair that makes for a seriously understated look, given what this card is capable of on paper. However, if you look closely, you'll notice that the section on which the MSI and Corsair logos are etched is actually transparent, revealing part of the PCB and the H55 pump.

There's also a metal backplate for additional structural reinforcement.

As expected, the more powerful cooling solution enables the card to be clocked at higher clock speeds. It is factory overclocked out of the box, with a 1,190MHz base clock and 1,291MHz boost clock. The effective memory clock sports a less aggressive overclock, sitting at 7,096MHz. The card is equipped with the usual 6GB of GDDR5 memory and a 384-bit memory bus width.
