A powerful card just got even better. MSI has announced the MSI GeForce GTX 980 Ti Lightning, its latest take on the stellar NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 Ti. While we really liked the MSI GeForce GTX 980 Ti Gaming 6G, the Lightning ups the ante with a beefed-up triple-fan cooler, custom lighting, and dual BIOS.

As the latest member of MSI’s Lightning series of cards, the GeForce GTX 980 Ti Lightning is designed with overclocking in mind. The dual BIOS – one of which is a dedicated LN2 BIOS – allow overclockers to experiment with more extreme settings and easily recover if things go south. Furthermore, the card sports an enhanced power design, with 12 power phases for the GPU and three for the memory.

According to MSI, the power delivery system has also been improved, with dedicated digital PWM controllers for both the GPU and the memory and phase-locked loop (PLL). This is intended to give you better control over power delivery to individual components for higher and more stable overclocks.

In addition, the TriFrozr cooler utilizes three 90mm Torx fans for additional airflow to help you keep temperatures in check. Like the dual-fan TwinFrozr V cooler, all three fans are independently controlled, giving you finer control both temperature and noise. It also enables the card to respond more quickly when temperatures rise in a specific part of the card.

Compared to the MSI GeForce GTX 980 Ti Gaming 6G, out-of-the-box clock speeds have been bumped up to a 1203MHz base clock and 1304MHz boost clock. The effective memory clock rate is also slightly higher at 7096MHz.

MSI has also spruced things up in the aesthetics department. The Lightning takes a leaf from the MSI X99 Godlike Gaming motherboard with Mystic Light. The LED backlit Lightning branding on the card’s side can now be customized with your preferred color scheme to match to rest of your system.
