MRT Tunnels to Get 3G Internet Speeds by end July 2011

Singaporean commuters, there's much reason to rejoice. Singapore's three telcos have been given a deadline to provision 3G internet speeds on SMRT's existing underground network by end July 2011. Currently, users (even us) are frustrated at the loss of 3G mobile internet speeds when we commute through the tunnels along the North-South and East-West line.

The Straits Times - Singapore's three telcos, said the Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts Lui Tuck Yew in Parliament on Thursday, must complete the installation of the necessary equipment to support the higher speed 3G or third-generation networks in all MRT tunnels by then. Previously, telecommunications sector regulator Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) had only said that the telcos had been 'working towards' the date.

With this deadline, smartphone users won't have to envy commuters of the North-East line, which has been enjoying 3G speeds since its inception. For the full story, click here.
