Molome: Allowing Businesses to Reach More Audience through Photo Sharing

Hmmm...what's that photo-sharing app on the iPhone? Why, it's Molome.

You may have heard of Instagram or Path, but have you heard of Molome? Available for iOS, Android, Nokia’s Ovi, and BlackBerry platforms, this free owl-as-a-mascot app aims to create a cross-platform photo-sharing social network for smartphone users. A product of Thailand’s HLP International (which itself also creates apps for other companies), Molome claims to have over 1.2 million users worldwide. What surprises us though is that, according to its spokesperson down here at CommunicAsia, only 5% of its users come from Thailand. The rest of its users come from around the world, though most of them are still within Asia.

So, what can you do with Molome? The premise is simple: you snap a photo, apply a filter, play with the various stickers and frames, and then share it on places like Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, Tumblr, Dropbox, and Google+. Of course, you can also follow other users to see their photos. (You can check out some of the users' photos here.) And how does it make money? Well, there are stickers that you can buy via in-app purchases. Also, Molome prides itself as being the world’s only photo-sharing app that supports businesses who want to increase their brand awareness through social media. It does that by allowing them to create brand-specific watermarks, stickers, and frames that users can overlay their photos with, and through user-engagement activities, such as completing a task to get exclusive stickers. In theory, this sounds like a win-win-win situation for all parties. Will Molome take off? We shall see.
