Microsoft's Edge browser will support Google's VP9 codec soon

Microsoft is working really hard on its new Edge browser that shipped alongside Windows 10. One work in progress item recently announced is the upcoming support for Google’s VP9 codec.

According to Microsoft, initial support for VP9 will be available in Windows Insider Preview builds soon. For a start, it will support adaptive streaming in the browser if the video is delivered in combination with MP4/AAC or other audio codecs already supported by Microsoft. The company is also considering support for other formats such as Opus, OGG, and Vorbis.

Moving forward, Microsoft hopes to develop new open technologies and formats that meet the needs of future media applications. The company is a founding member of the newly formed Alliance for Open Media, which has other heavyweight members like Google, Intel, Netflix, and Amazon.
