Microsoft Unveils Windows Phone "Mango" & Samsung SUR40 With Microsoft Surface

Singapore, 27 May 2011 – Microsoft today unveiled two groundbreaking technologies that are set to change the way consumers interact with Smartphone and computing devices. Featuring next generation natural user interfaces and the latest in interactive software, the Samsung SUR40 for Microsoft Surface and the next major release of Windows Phone - codenamed "Mango" – deliver richer, faster and more intuitive user experiences.

"Consumer computing today is delivering unprecedented standards of user-engagement," said John Fernandes, Director, Business & Marketing Organization, Microsoft Singapore. “Microsoft is spear-heading this evolution with the release of remarkable new devices such as "Mango" and Surface. Together, these technologies are pushing the boundaries of the Smartphone and computing market, and are set to change the way people interact with technology - and each other.”

Windows Phone "Mango"

Designed to be the easiest and fastest of smartphones, “Mango” offers more than exciting 500 new features that redefine how consumers communicate and use apps and the internet, offering better results with less effort. The Mango release will be available for free to Windows Phone 7 customers and is scheduled to ship on new phones later this year.

For many people today, the Smartphone experience has become complicated by a sea of disconnected apps and accounts as people attempt to keep pace with all the ways they communicate – from calls, texts, email and IM to status updates, Tweets, check-ins, photo posting and tagging. To help people stay on top of that growing complexity, the Mango release organizes information around the person or group people want to interact with, not the app they have to use.

According to Marc Hopstein, Windows Mobile Business Group Lead, Microsoft Asia, “Mango” brings communication back to focus on the people, making it easier to connect and share with those important to them

“Communication on a Smartphone is no longer dictated by the app(s) you use, but by who you want to connect with, and how you choose to do so. Windows Phone will challenge the way people think about apps. Today their usefulness is measured by what can be done within the app, but we see the promise of apps in how they can be integrated directly into the core experiences of the phone.”

In addition to making it easier to get timely notifications and updates from apps right from the Start Screen, the Mango release will also surface apps as part of search results and within Windows Phone Hubs. As a result, a useful app is more likely to be right there when you need it.

The Mango release will connect the power of the Web to the unique capabilities of Windows, through a combination of Internet Explorer and location awareness, camera and access to apps, to present a way of viewing the Web that is more localized, actionable and relevant.

Samsung SUR40 for Microsoft Surface

Samsung SUR40 for Microsoft Surface is today being released in Singapore, enabling local users and businesses to experience the breakthrough computing platform for the first time. The Samsung SUR40 responds to touch, natural hand gestures and real world objects, providing effortless interaction with information and digital content.

Microsoft Surface is a major advancement in computing that enables companies to advance their business and generate greater customer satisfaction and loyalty by providing information and services in a more engaging way.

With a large, 360-degree, user interface, Surface offers a unique gathering place where multiple users can collaboratively and simultaneously interact with content and each other. Surface comes to life in Singapore on the Samsung SUR40, a large, thin display screen that incorporates object recognition and massive multi-touch as well as a 40-inch HD screen and the ability to be used either horizontally or vertically.

Microsoft Surface comes equipped with PixelSense technology, which recognizes fingers, hands and objects placed on the screen, enabling vision-based interaction without the use of cameras. Samsung SUR40 raises the bar in terms of consumer engagement and draws on all the senses – visual, tactile, aural – to empower people to share, collaborate and explore together.

"Samsung SUR40 by Microsoft Surface delivers an interactive experience unlike any other and will change the way companies engage and connect with their consumers,” said Somanna Palacanda, Director, Microsoft Surface. “It will bring companies around the world news ways to drive sales, showcase their brand and increase customer satisfaction and loyalty."

Globally, Fujifilm Corp., Red Bull GmbH and Sheration Hotels & Resort Worldwide Inc. are already among the compaines that have announced they will deploy the use of Samsung SUR40 by Microsoft Surface.

Samsung SUR40 by Microsoft Surface will retail in Singapore for USD8,600 per unit.
