Microsoft rolls out OneDrive for Business Sync Client preview; updates Android and iOS apps

At long last, OneDrive for Business users have a new sync client for Windows and Mac that promises to be much better than the previous version. This “next-gen” sync client takes a lot of cues from the consumer version, and its coming is hardly a secret. But now, it’s finally here, though still in a preview form.

Also, this is a staged rollout to help manage demand; so if you haven’t gotten yours, there’s a waitlist you can sign up. The standard disclaimer applies here, and that is don’t use it on production machines. Additionally, the preview client shouldn’t be deployed on more than 50 computers in an organization. Microsoft also says that at the moment, the focus is on cloud syncing, so don’t expect syncing for SharePoint Online Team Sites and SharePoint On-Premises.

At the same time, Microsoft is also improving the browser experience in OneDrive for Business. You can switch between a list and a preview tile view, access common commands using the new command bar, see more info in the new Details pane, and share links with external parties more easily.

And finally, the OneDrive for Business Android and iOS apps are updated too. The Android version gains offline support, and the iOS version gets new simpler command gestures and cool ways to work with PDF files. Offline support for iOS and Windows Phone will follow in the future.
