It used to be that Samsung was the only SSD manufacturer that was making drives with 3D NAND, but not any more.

Micron has just released its new Crucial MX300 SSD, which is the brand's first 3D NAND SSD. Crucial is the consumer arm of Micron.

For the uninitiated, 3D NAND is a new type of NAND technology that aims to overcome the shortcomings of traditional planar NAND architecture by stacking memory cells on top of each other.

If you want to find out more about this technology, we have written about it in depth here.

Specifically, the MX300 will utilize Micron's new 32-layer 384Gbit TLC NAND. This will be paired with a Marvell 88SS1074 controller.

The drive will be offered in a standard 2.5-inch form factor and will utilize the SATA 6Gbps interface.

Claimed sequential read and write speeds are 530MB/s and 510MB/s respectively. Whereas, random read and write performance is said to be in the region of 92k IOPS and 83k IOPS respectively.

The Crucial MX300 will be available only in 750GB capacities for now. Later this year, Crucial will release the MX300 is other capacities and will also make it available in the smaller M.2 form factor.
