The Land Transport Authority (LTA), in collaboration with Nanyang Technological University (NTU), will conduct trials for two fully-autonomous buses. This first-of-its-kind trial will be conducted with other joint research projects under the auspices of LTA-NTU Transport Research Center (TRC).

For the self-driving buses trial, LTA will work with Energy Research Institute @ NTU (ERI@N). ERI@N will “test and develop their self-driving vehicle technology” with the two, 12-meter long electric hybrid buses. For a start, the buses will ply the roads between NTU and Cleantech Park, with the possibility of extending their trial route to Pioneer MRT station. The aim is to ferry commuters from NTU and Cleantech Park to the said MRT station.

According to ERI@N, the electric hybrid buses can be charged on-the-go when they stop at a bus depot or bus stops. Ultimately, ERI@N plans to “outfit existing buses with a suite of intelligent sensors and develop an autonomous system that can effectively navigate Singapore’s local road traffic and climate conditions, enabling the self-driving buses to operate safely and efficiently.” The joint news statement by LTA and NTU didn’t specify the start date of the trial for the pair of self-driving buses. In the wake of the unfortunate accident involving a nuTonomy self-driving taxi, the test phase for the pair of autonomous buses could be delayed. For more information, do head over to LTA’s newsroom for the joint official announcement.
