More leaks ahead of Apple's event this Friday point to an iPad Air 2 that's thinner, and more powerful. This is what the leaks point to so far about Apple's upcoming iPad Air:

  • Thinner, reportedly only 7mm thin. That would make it thinner than the current iPad Air at 7.5mm, and about as thin as the new iPhone 6 (6.9mm) and 6 Plus (7.1mm).
  • It will be the first iPad to have a Touch ID home button.
  • It will likely have an A8X chip, clocked faster than the A8 processors introduced in the iPhones 6 and 6 Plus.
  • It might be the first iPad to come with 2GB of RAM, previous iPads and iPhones have all stuck with 1GB of RAM.

Vietnamese blog Tinhte.vn released pictures of what looks like a dummy iPad Air 2 model, which looks thinner than the previous iPad Air. Aside from the new Touch ID home button, the other physical difference seems to be the lack of a mute switch. Images published by Apple.club.tw show a logic board purportedly from the new iPad Air, and reveals an A8X processor with what MacRumors deduces is 2GB of RAM.

It also looks like the iPad Air 2 might still come with 16GB of storage, leading MacRumors to speculate if Apple will adopt the same storage strategy for the iPad Air 2 it did for the iPhone 6; with 16GB/64GB/128GB models.

Apple is holding a press event later this week on the 16th in the US, where it's expected to show the new iPad Air and iPad mini, as well as new iMacs, and launch OS X Yosemite which has been in public beta. It will start at 10AM P.D.T. which translates to 1AM Singapore time early Friday morning (the 17th). If you can't wait to see Apple's latest, the event will be streamed live on their website.
