When Twitter acquired and launched live-streaming app Periscope, it seemed like that was the end for Meerkat, a rival streaming app that made waves at South by Southwest (SXSW) 2015. To add on, Twitter even cut off Meerkat’s access to its social graph, which meant that Meerkat users would no longer be notified when people they follow begin broadcasting.

Like Periscope, Meerkat enables users to stream live video straight to their Twitter feed. There’s even a term for it, “Meerkatting”. But despite the setbacks, Meerkat appears to be forging ahead and the live-streaming app that actually appeared before Periscope is now available for Android users to try out. Simply fill out the Google form to request access to the beta program.

Both Meerkat and Periscope were previously only available on iOS, and it’s nice to see that Meerkat is persevering in its efforts to grow its user base by expanding to the largest mobile operating system. Twitter may have thrown its weight behind Periscope, but Meerkat is determined not to disappear into obscurity.
