The LG UltraWide 34UC79G combines a 34-inch curved IPS display with a 144Hz refresh rate

Massive gaming monitors with eye-watering 21:9 aspect ratios and high refresh rates are still few and far between, which puts the LG UltraWide 34UC79G monitor in rarefied company. First announced at IFA 2016, LG’s new 34-inch monitor boasts a native 144Hz refresh rate and support for AMD’s FreeSync variable refresh rate technology.

Looking more closely at the specifications, you’ll find an IPS panel with a resolution of 2,560 x 1,080 pixels, a 5ms gray-to-gray response time, and a peak brightness of 250 nits. There isn’t much to help the monitor stand out on paper here (in fact, the resolution could be considered a little wanting), and its distinguishing features are ultimately still its high refresh rate and large, curved display. 

There aren’t many options if you want the latter two features today, and you’re limited to picks like the Acer Predator Z35 and ASUS ROG Swift PG348Q. In fact, the latter’s display has to be overclocked to even hit its maximum of 100Hz.

LG’s display supports refresh rates between 50Hz and 144Hz, more than enough for AMD FreeSync and its Low Frame Rate Compensation (LFRC) technology, which requires a monitor with a maximum refresh rate at least 2.5 times that of the minimum.

Other features include two USB Type-A ports, one of which supports fast charging, and a mouse line hook to prevent drag resistance caused by the mouse cable.

The LG UltraWide 34UC79G costs S$1,099 and will be available at all LG authorized dealers starting from 15 November.
