LG Sets Sales Target of 75 Million Phones for 2013, Jumps on WP8 Bandwagon

LG Electronics is setting a sales target of 75 million handsets this year, which marks an increase of 20 million from 2012. According to The Korea Times, LG aims to sell 45 million units of smartphones, and 30 million budget and feature phones. The company also revealed that Windows Phone 8 (WP8) devices are in the works.
The Korea Times - "We will release quite a number of new Optimus devices this year and LG also has some new smartphones in the works, that will run Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8,’’ a senior executive from one of LG’s local partners said by telephone.
Consumers can expect LG to unveil a 5.5-inch Full-HD flagship smartphone at MWC 2013 next month. The LG executive also said that the company is confident of its phone business picking up this year due to the positive reception of its Optimus G and Nexus 4 smartphones.
The Korea Times - "This year won’t be as bullish for LG as last year. But LG’s Optimus G and Nexus 4 impressed some major carriers and consumers. Because our budget Optimus smartphones are receiving lots of attention, we are confident to get our phone business on a rising track this year,’’ said the executive.
LG Electronics is not the only phone maker to have a positive outlook on its mobile business. Samsung is aiming to sell more than 500 million phones this year. To achieve this record number of shipments, Samsung is planning to ride on the Galaxy S lineup of smartphones, and diversify its portfolio with WP8 and Tizen-powered devices.
