LG Looks Set to Resurrect WebOS in Its 2014 Smart TVs
Updated on Jan 6, 2014:
LG has officially acknowledged that it'll bring WebOS to its smart TVs. Since this is a part of LG's 'smart technology intensive product strategy', the company is doing it in a big way too, as 70% of its 2014 smart TVs will come with the new platform. The new WebOS-powered smart TV platform aims to improve user experience (be it setup, content discovery, or navigation), touts a new launcher function, and is equipped with voice and gesture recognition features. The new TVs are expected to arrive this year, starting with Korea, the U.S. and Europe, followed by the other markets.

Our favorite leaker @evleaks is at it again. This time, he has posted a picture of an LG TV running WebOS. Yes, the former mobile operating system by Palm. Remember, Palm was bought over by HP in 2010, but the latter went on to sell the OS to LG early last year. It’s no secret that LG intends to use WebOS for its smart TVs, and after nearly a year, it looks like the Korean company has something to show for it.
It’s probably fair to say that up to this point, smart TV UIs in general are a convoluted mess. Can LG do better with its interpretation of WebOS’ famous card-based interface? It’s only a matter of days before we find out more at CES 2014.
