LG G6 uses heat pipes to prevent overheating, undergoes stricter safety testings

LG is going to pull out all stops to ensure its upcoming G6 flagship smartphone from suffering the same fate as the explosive Samsung Galaxy Note7.

Lee Seok-jong, who is from LG Electronics’ mobile communication operation group, reportedly told the Korea Herald that the company is using new technology and conducting tougher safety tests on the G6 phone.

The G6 will come with heat pipes - made of copper - to conduct heat away quickly and avoid heat concentrating in one area. Heat pipes are commonly used in laptops and personal computers to prevent the processors from overheating. There are already phones in the market with heat pipes such as the Sony Xperia Z2, Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 edge.

The Korea Herald - “We are conducting battery heat exposure tests to a temperature 15 percent higher than the temperature set by the international standards of the US and Europe,” a LG official said. “The battery also undergoes diverse tests such as piercing it with a sharp nail or dropping a heavy object on it from a high place,” he added.

In addition, LG states that it will be conducting safety tests that are stricter than the international standards. The G6 phone will also be put through a new, more complex accelerated-life test to detect potential faults and failures in several components such as display, camera and fingerprint sensor.

The LG G6 is likely to be announced at Mobile World Congress 2017 and may hit retail shelves on 10 March. It will sport the world's first "QHD+" display with an aspect ratio of 18:9 and have a more traditional smartphone design with no support for add-on modules
