Large Turnout at M1's Midnight Launch of the New iPad

Large Turnout at M1's Midnight Launch of the New iPad

Clearly everyone is still fantasized by Apple's iPad, even if the latest iteration doesn't really bring a whole lot of plus points.

As the only telco in Singapore to hold a midnight launch for the new iPad at its physical store, it came as no surprise that there was a large turnout at M1 Paragon flagship store earlier this morning.

According to M1's announcement, Singaporeans were not the only ones in the queue. Apparently, some people flew in from overseas just to purchase the iPads, which explained why several people in the queue were spotted carrying their luggages.

When asked if M1 had sufficient stocks for the night, a M1 staff stated that the shop had enough for everyone in the queue. People who joined the queue as late as 11.20 p.m. were still able to purchase the iPads. M1 also placed a restriction of one iPad purchase per identity document (ID).

The turnout for the iPad at M1 Paragon flagship store pales in comparison with the launch of the Apple iPhone 4S last October. The crowd that turned out for the iPhone 4S launch was significantly larger and the queue stretched towards the direction of Lucky Plaza. This is only natural since tablets are still complementary devices, whereas the smartphone has become the essential tool for everyone. Even so, we honestly didn't expect such a big turnout for the latest iPad launch, especially when there aren't actually that many plus points going for it and the offers were pretty much standard-fare.

Just to check, we also dropped by the StarHub outlet at Plaza Singapura and found no queue at 11.45 p.m. The Plaza Singapura StarHub Shop is one of the four outlets which will start selling the new iPads at 8 a.m today. Could StarHub's higher monthly subscription of its iPad plan be the deal breaker for consumers? If you are planning to get the iPad with a two-year contract, do check out our detailed analysis of the price plans and the total costs incurred over two years.

Those of you wondering about Singtel's online sales of the new iPad on SingTelshop.com, they've all been sold out since 2.28 a.m. today. Singtel's retail shops will commence iPad sales over the counter from 8.30 a.m. later today. You also can get the new iPad from other authorized resllers and retailers such as Courts and iStudio.

It's midnight, but no queue yet at StarHub.
