Intel Planning to Launch Web TV Service and Set-Top Box

Intel is planning to launch its own Internet TV service along with its set-top box by the end of the year. This is according to Mr. Erik Huggers who is the corporate vice president at Intel Media, a new company division that comprises staff members formerly from Apple, Google, Netflix and Jabber.

Last month, we reported that Intel is planning to launch its own set-top box. Now, the company has revealed its Intel Media division that aims to work with the entire broadcasting industry to get live television to consumers over the Internet. The set-top box will be made available as a new consumer electronics product, under a new brand, and can be purchased directly from Intel or from authorized resellers.

Mr. Huggers also said that the services offered by Intel Media is not a 'value-play' but one that emphasizes on quality and user experience. One unique feature of its set-top box is its ability to recognize the user through its built-in HD camera and facial-recognition technology to deliver customized programming. In another scenario, this feature can be used as a sort of video conferencing tool. For consumers who need to maintain their privacy, Mr. Huggers mentioned the presence of a manual shutter to turn off the built-in camera.

He said that the new device will be positioned as an all-in-one solution that will include live television, on-demand programming and even applications. However, he was quick to add that since Intel Media is in for the long run, consumers should expect some time for the services and its delivered content to mature while they are rolled out as a single package.
