Intel Banking on Wireless Charging to Improve Mobile Offerings

According to reports, Intel is looking to implement wireless charging technology to improve its mobile offerings. Specifically, Intel is planning to enable its Ultrabooks to wirelessly charge nearby Intel-powered smartphones. It's looking to implement and offer products with this capability by the second half of next year.

Wireless charging is an attractive and promising technology but an efficient means of energy transfer and consensus to standards have been slow in getting established. Leading the way is the Wireless Power Consortium, made up of Fairchild, Freescale, Fulton, Huawei, MediaTek, Nokia, Samsung, ST-Ericsson and Texas Instruments. For more information, you can read up on our hands-on on Freescale's solution at Computex 2012 using the WPC's "Qi" standard of wireless power transfer to see how it works.

Intel is not part of this consortium and is instead looking to strike it out on its own.
