Intel Aiming to Revolutionize Cable TV
Not just happy with their extended dominance in the computing chipset market, it is also rumored that Intel may be moving into the smartphone business with it being suspected that the tech giants are developing their own smartphone processor and platform. Now, there is also news that Intel might be looking to revolutionize the cable TV and IPTV market segments.
Apparently Intel is looking to launch its own set-top box, which could be out for beta testing as soon as March 2013. The game changing feature for this new product is rumored to be the option to subscribe to individual channels. Current services levy a flat subscription rate for packaged television channels and content. This inevitably results in users paying a lot more for content they did not necessarily want or need.
Google, Apple and Amazon have all tried to change this subscription model before but the media companies have always held firm. And now it seems that Intel has taken on the task of negotiating with the relevant parties. With a lucrative payment model already in place, Intel definitely has its work cut out to sway the minds of Big Media.
