CrackBerry obtained leaked pictures of Research in Motion (RIM)'s upcoming BlackBerry 10 operating system (OS) which show a new user interface (UI) that borrows design elements from its competitors.

According to CrackBerry, the images are part of a 14-page PDF document which is prepared by one of RIM's external advertising agency partners for the BlackBerry 10 OS. Similar to what RIM said during the unveiling of BlackBerry 10, the new user interface looks like a scaled-down of the BlackBerry PlayBook OS.

The image above reveals an updated icon tray with three shortcuts (phone, search and camera). Besides having new artwork, the app icons appear to be of similar sizes which resemble the uniformity of Apple iOS UI. Another similarity with competing mobile OSes is the folder support where users can see the icons of the apps inside.

Another significant feature of BlackBerry 10 seen is the support for widgets on the homescreen. BlackBerry 10 is spotted in one photo showcasing four mini widgets (Weather, Phone, Music and Maps). Apps also seem to take on a smarter role in BlackBerry 10. For example, the Pictures icon shows an image from the album as its thumbnail. The Clock icon can display the next alarm that a user has set.

Other images in the document revealed the Universal Inbox seen on BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 and a new sleek caller display screen. The video chat option shown in the caller display screen hints that RIM intends to make it easier to use the front facing cameras on BlackBerry 10 devices for video calls.

From the looks of the new user interface and leaked image of the first BlackBerry 10 device, there is a good chance that RIM is able to regain lost grounds and get back into the game alongside Apple, Google Android and Windows Phone. As RIM is demonstrating the capabilities of BlackBerry 10 OS at the upcoming Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2012, we will be there to get a better perspective on the new platform.
