Huawei has decided to go big to win big in the smartphone market as it released yet another 6-inch phablet, the Mate 8.

As the successor to the one-year-old Ascend Mate 7, the Mate 8 comes with a 6-inch Full-HD d(1,920 x 1,080 pixels) display with 2.5D glass and the latest Kirin 950 octa-core processor which consists of 4 Cortex-A72 and 4 Cortex-A53) for better performance and efficiency.

Like the Nexus 6P, the Mate 8 sports a fingerprint sensor just below the rear camera. The 16-megapixel rear camera has its own image signal processor and a pixel size of 1.12um. Other specs include microSD expansion up to 128GB, Android 6.0 Marshmallow with Huawei's customized EMUI interface, and a 4,000mAh battery.

For now, the Mate 8 will be available only in China with a global launch slated at CES 2016 in January. It is available in four colors - champagne gold, moonlight silver, space gray and mocha brown. Its retail prices are US$500 (~S$700) for the model with 3GB RAM and 32GB internal storage, and US$690 (~S$970) for the 4GB RAM and 128GB internal storage

Judging from Huawei's recent product strategy, it seems to be betting big on phablets to win big in the smartphone market. It overtook Xiaomi to be China's biggest smartphone vendor in Q3 2015 and the recent high profile launch of the Nexus 6P and Mate S with Force Touch could help Huawei maintain its lead.
