HP has announced the Z2 Mini G3, a tiny PC with some serious workstation credentials. This is a machine powered by an NVIDIA Quadro M620 2GB GPU and supports up to an Intel Xeon E3-1200v5 CPU, so there’s really no shortage of processing power.

That said, HP has accomplished quite a feat in managing to cram all that workstation-class hardware into a diminutive chassis that is only 57.9mm tall. The company says the Z2 Mini is around 90 per cent smaller than a traditional business-class tower, thus opening up a whole range of placement and mounting options.

For instance, you can mount the Z2 Mini under your desk, at the back of your monitor, or even on a VESA arm between the arm and monitor’s rear.

This is a business-focused rig, and HP is targeting professionals that work with AutoCAD and other 3D and graphics software. At launch, the Z2 Mini is already certified for use with over 20 professional applications.

Naturally, this means there’s support for a good amount of memory and storage as well, and you can equip it with up to 32GB of DDR4 RAM and a 1.5TB HP Z Turbo Drive SSD. The top cover is also easily removable for easy access to the internal components.

However, if you don’t need the Xeon processor, you can also opt for an Intel Core i3, i5, or i7 CPU.

Cooling was a priority for HP as well, and the heat vents on the corners of the machine are designed to combat blockage caused by loose papers and all manner of desk detritus.

Finally, you’ll find multiple outputs for DisplayPort, two USB 3.1 Type-C ports (no Thunderbolt 3 support unfortunately), and four USB 3.0 Type-A ports. HDMI is obviously a glaring omission, but certain trade-offs are to be expected with a PC this size.

The Z2 Mini G3 starts at US$699, but you can probably expect to pay a lot more for the top-end configuration with the Intel Xeon CPU. The system is pegged to be available worldwide in December.
