Hands-on with the Cogito Pop connected watch

The Cogito Pop is not a smart watch, it is a connected watch.

Smart watch this, smart watch that, it seems like there is a new smart watch every other day. The Cogito Pop, however, is a little different. First of all, Cogito is quick to point out that the Pop is not a smart watch. Rather, it is a connected watch. What is the difference then?

The difference, as it turns out, is both philosophical and functional. As you can see, the Cogito Watch was designed first and foremost as a regular watch with a typical round face and no display. The idea, according to Cogito, is to put design first and functionality second. So instead of a typical display that most smart watches have, the Pop relies on four indicators, located between 10 and 2 o'clock to alert users of notifications. From left to right, there is a notification for incoming text messages, emails and social media alerts. The last indicator is for the watch's status. The Cogito Pop also features a Japanese quartz movement for timekeeping.

Instead of a display, the Cogito Pop relies on simple LED indicators to relay notifications to its wearer.

The Cogito Pop is very light and comfortable to wear, though a bit thick to fit under shirt cuffs.

Since the focus is on design, the Cogito Pop comes in no less than six different colors, all with funky names like Raspberry Crush, White Crisp, Black Mamba and more. The Cogito Watch comes in a 43mm plastic case and a plastic diver's style unidirectional bezel that moves in 60-clicks. The case itself is light, but a tad thick at 14mm. The Cogito Pop also comes with a matching strap in soft rubber that is comfortable to wear. We were told that there are no plans for interchangeable straps at this point of time, but it looks as if the Pop uses regular spring bars and what seems like 22mm straps, so adventurous users should have no problems changing straps if they wish to. The watch is also water-resistant to 100 meters.

The Cogito Pop will come in six different colors.

For those wondering about power consumption, the Cogito Pop is actually powered by two batteries - one for timekeeping and the other for the connected watch functionality. Hence, no recharging is necessary and Cogito also told us that the battery powering the connected watch features would be good for up to a couple of months of regular usage and can be easily replaced at any watchmaker.

The Cogito Pop is compatible with both iOS and Android devicesis now available for S$179.
