Google to Sell e-Books this Summer?

Google to Sell e-Books this Summer?

According to the Times Online, we could see Google entering the e-book market as early as this June or July.

Google is set to join the e-book battle by launching its digital book service this summer.

Speaking in New York last night, a senior executive of the search engine giant said it plans to open “Google Editions” — after years in development — in late June or July.

Readers will be able to buy digital copies they find through Google’s book-search function. Book retailers will be able to sell Google Editions on their own sites, getting the majority of any revenue from sales.

Chris Palma did not reveal further details but he did say that users would be able to read e-books through a web browser. This would threaten the success of devices designed solely to read e-books, such as Amazon’s Kindle. The system could also provide stiff competition to Apple, which launched an online bookstore when it released the iPad tablet device last month.
