Google Plans to Create Digital Newsstand with Publishers

According to anonymous sources who have spoken to the Wall Street Journal, Google is making plans to enter the digital distribution business. Reportedly, Google has initiated discussions with publishers such as Conde Naste, Hearst Corp and Time Warner Inc's Time Inc unit, promising that it'll take a smaller cut of the revenue than Apple's 30%.

Reuters - Google Inc has approached several magazine publishers about creating a digital newsstand, in a move that could open a new front in the Internet company's rivalry with Apple Inc, according to a news report.

The digital newsstand would provide a way for media companies to sell versions of their publications designed for tablet PCs and smartphones based on Google's Android operating system, according to a story in the Wall Street Journal on Sunday, citing anonymous sources.

What we do know so far is that Google Android 3.0, aka Honeycomb, will be launching real soon. With Google previously stating that Honeycomb is optimized for the tablet experience, this is a clear indication that the company is aiming to gain a foothold in digital distribution for the future tablets powered by Android 3.0.
