According to a report by The Information, Brillo is designed to run on low-powered devices, with 32- to 64MB of system memory. It is likely Brillo will be released under Google’s own Android brand name as the unit behind this initiative is closely linked to the Android platform team.

Brillo isn’t the only software platform in the pipeline for IoT devices as Microsoft has similar plans. Just recently, the Redmond software company announced Windows 10 IoT Core Insider Preview. Windows 10 IoT Core is version of Windows 10 for low-cost, small devices like the Raspberry Pi 2 and Intel Minnowboard Max, which is an updated version of the Intel Minnowboard.

As noted by Fortune, Google is aware of platform fragmentation faced by the IoT device market; however, by targeting such devices with Brillo will give Google advantages offered by low-level hardware abstraction capabilities of the new OS. It offers them more control over security aspects of IoT devices. At the same time, given the low operating overheads of Brillo, the new OS will allow manufacturers to build connected devices for smart homes. Besides Brillo, Google will also announce the new Android M that may just help the company make inroads into the enterprise mobile market segment.
