"Flexible" Screens by Samsung Imminent?
Update: Korea IT Times has backed rumors of the upcoming Galaxy Note 2's use of a flexible 5.5-inch AMOLED display. The Note 2 is said to utilize an Unbreakable Plane (UBP) and plastic substrate which reduces its thickness by 0.4mm, and thus increasing its battery capacity too.
Samsung plans to churn out 'flexible' AMOLED screens on consumer devices soon, according to a report by Korean IT news site, DDaily. And possibly as early as this quarter if the Verge's translation is anything to go by. Known as 'Youm' panels, these screens have a mere depth of only 0.6mm, compared to conventional displays with a general thickness of 1.8mm. Besides its slimness, other highlights of these 'Youm' screens include its lightweight characteristics and highly flexible nature which make them more pliable and versatile for deployment.
However, it is reported that the 'Youm' displays will initially be rolled out with an additional layer of hard glass on top as a protective shield. Even so, Samsung is able to fashion an AMOLED screen as thin as 1mm using this approach. It is rumored that the upcoming Galaxy Note 2 may benefit from such a design, although nothing is confirmed at this point in time. Samsung's goal is to mass manufacture flexible screens as they are by 2014.
