Facebook expands Like button with new Reactions emoji
Earlier in September, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed that they will soon be testing an alternative to the Like button. He also said that it would not be a Dislike button, but said that the aim was to give users more ways to express themselves.
Enter Reactions, a set of six emoji that will that will let users express new feelings - love, laughter, happiness, shock, sadness and anger. Don't worry the Like button is still there.
However, don't expect to find these new emoji on your Facebook app yet. According to Facebook, they have rolled Reactions out only in Spain and Ireland for the time being as tests. They will then decide if it needs to be tweaked and when they should introduce it in other parts of the world.
Why these two countries, you may wonder. According to Facebook's Director of Product, Adam Mosseri, it's because both have "largely national user bases without extensive international friend networks". This means they work better as closed test groups. Ireland is of course English-speaking, while Spain will let Facebook see how well Reactions work with mostly non-English users.
This certainly looks like an interesting new addition and sure beats have just a Like button. We do think Reactions will get implemented across the entire Facebook at some point and the tricky thing from there on is how to resist the temptation to add even more emoji. Right now, the six look pretty look good to us, maybe an additional "meh" emoji?
