Don't like U2? Here's how you can remove them

If you have been a longtime Apple user, you would probably appreciate the close ties Irish rock-band U2 has with Apple. In fact, the band featured prominently in Apple's iPod ads back in 2004 - around the time of the 4th generation "click wheel" iPod.

Last week, Apple announced its new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus as well as its Apple Watch, and as part of the announcements, Apple also gave away free copies of U2's latest album, Songs of Innocence, to all of its iTunes customers.

The problem, however, is that instead of giving users the choice to download the album on their own, Apple automatically pushed it to all iTunes accounts. And if you sent your device to automatically download new content, the songs would automatically appear on your devices. This annoyed many users. In fact, some users, presumably those who are too young to know hits like "Sunday Bloody Sunday" and "With or Without You", were left scratching their heads wondering who they were.

Fortunately for these users, Apple has come up with a simple and fuss-free way to delete U2's songs off their devices. However, be warned that doing so will remove U2's Songs of Innocence from their iTunes music library and iTunes purchases and that once it is removed from your account, you will need to manually download it again. The album, however, will be available as a free download to everyone until October 13, 2014.

Here are the steps:

  • Go to https://itunes.com/soi-remove.
  • Click Remove Album to confirm you'd like to remove the album from your account.
  • Sign in with the Apple ID and password you use to buy from the iTunes Store.
  • You'll see a confirmation message that the album has been removed from your account.
  • If you downloaded the songs to iTunes on your Mac or PC or to the Music app on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, you'll need to delete them manually.
