Disney bans selfie sticks
Disney bans selfie sticks
Disney has officially issued a statement saying that they will ban selfie sticks in their parks and other properties in the US from tomorrow onwards. International parks will have the ban start on the first day of July.
Selfie sticks will now join the rest of Disney's banned items on their list of restricted personal items, which includes skateboards and scooters.
Previously, selfie sticks were allowed, though the rides and certain areas within Disney's theme parks were off limits. Offenders who were caught using the sticks in those areas were usually warned by the cast members or personnel present. That doesn't seem to have worked and Disney has resorted to banning the sticks completely from all of its properties, such the various Disney Worlds, its water parks and even DisneyQuest.
Selfie sticks users gained notoriety when they flaunted safety rules on the rides, using the sticks while riding roller coasters and other attractions. Obviously, Disney views that as a safety hazard. It tried to counter that by putting up signs banning selfie sticks for its attractions but failed to gained any traction. Recently, a ride at Disney California Adventure was closed for an hour after a passenger pulled out a selfie stick while on it.
When the ban comes into effect, selfie sticks found by park personnel at bag checks at the entrance of all of Disney's properties will remove the sticks. Guests will then have the option of stowing the sticks back at their vehicle or rooms or leave their sticks at the entrance, where they can reclaim them once they leave.
