Dell’s prowess in the monitor market segment should be known to any who have experienced the quality delivered by their high-end UltraSharp offerings. However, in a quest to bring similar quality to the masses, they have unveiled four new monitor models as part of the S Series. The new displays are available in 27-inch, 24-inch, 23-inch, and 21.5-inch sizes.
Excluding the variety of size, the 27-inch Dell S2740L, 24-inch S2440L, 23-inch S2340L, and 21.5-inch S2240L share a lot of common characteristics. All the monitors have a native resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels, and feature LED backlighting. The design aesthetics also place the models as part of one series with their minimal bezels. For example, the S2240L and S2340L have such thin borders that we've to go real close to spot them. On the other hand, the S2440L and S2740L sport flushed edge-to-edge glass on a glossy screen.
In a bid to deliver superior image quality, the S2740L, S2340L, and S2240L use IPS panels. For the uninitiated, in-plane switching technology typically brings about excellent viewing angles and color reproduction. The S2440L is the odd one out here as it sports a VA (vertical alignment) panel instead. Having seen the IPS models in action with our own eyes, we've to say that the performance across the board is pretty impressive. While the S2440L also provides wide viewing angles, we did notice that the colors weren't as rich. Of course, we can only give our final conclusion when we've the monitors in the lab for testing.
