Cortana is a Good Friend of Clippy

How to Replace Cortana with Clippy for a Few Seconds in Windows Phone 8.1

Most Windows Phone developers (and regular Windows Phone users) we know of are exploring the Windows Phone 8.1 OS that was announced at the Build conference a few weeks back and made available earlier this week.

A star attraction of the new mobile OS is Cortana, a digital personal assistant often compared to Apple’s Siri and Google Now. That said, Cortana isn’t available outside of the U.S., but the workaround is fairly simple, something we assume Windows Phone users savvy enough to try the new OS already knew.

Like how people used to throw all sorts of questions at Siri in its early days, people are now doing the same to Cortana. By way of the Windows Phone Central forum, it looks like Cortana packs more Easter eggs than smart alec responses.

For instance, if you ask (through voice or typing) about Clippy, Cortana’s halo avatar will turn to the often mocked, animated paper clip Office assistant that was found in Office 97 to Office 2003. Clippy will hang around for a few seconds and blink its googly eyes before turning back into Cortana. There are a few ways you can phrase the question, and each will generate a different answer (more screenshots below).

Of course, unlike Clippy who was impractical and annoying, Cortana is extremely useful and enjoyable to work with.
