Cisco and NXP Announce Investment in Cohda Wireless
Cisco and NXP Semiconductors have just announced that they have both made investments in Cohda Wireless, a company that specializes in wireless automotive communication for safety applications.
Together, the three companies hope to improve Car-to-Car (C2C) and Car-to-Infrastructure (C2I) communications. Such communication can allow cars to interact with each other, thereby warning other drivers of potential hazards and help avoid accidents. Additionally, this can also be used to warn of impending traffic congestion so that drivers can act on it and help ease the flow of traffic. Furthermore, active safety systems can be put in place to reduce fatalities on the road. Finally, such communication can also help improve traffic management systems, thereby reducing traffic congestion, greenhouse emissions and improving the quality of lives for everyone.
Already, the collaboration has yielded t a market-ready, flexible wireless communication solution and trials are now underway using technologies from all three companies. In August 2012, the “Safety Pilot Model Deployment” trial by the US Department of Transport was initiated, and other major field trials include simTD in Germany, ScoreF in France, and ERP2 in Singapore.
