Canon announces refresh of their EF 50mm f/1.8 lens with STM

Canon has just announced the launch of a new EF 50mm f/1.8 STM lens that offers an angle of view similar to human vision on a full-frame camera, and the equivalent field of view of an 80mm lens when mounted on a APS-C camera.

The key improvement here is with the Stepping Motor autofocus technology, as it allows the lens to achieve virtually silent autofocus that’s smoother and quicker– crucial when recording video. The lens itself has enhanced metal mounts for greater reliability, and gains an optimized Super Spectra lens coating that helps reduce flare and ghosting issues. Also new, is a 7-blade aperture design that should make for more attractive bokeh.

Finally, the EF50mm f/1.8 STM has a reduced minimum focusing distance of 35cm compared to the 45cm on the EF50mm f/1.8, meaning you can capture final details with ease thanks to the improved proximity. (0.21x magnification vs 0.15x)

Pricing and availability have yet to be announced.

*Update: The EF 50mm f/1.8 STM is now available at all major Canon authorized dealers for S$189.
