At CES 2013, Canon has unveiled three new entry-level camcorders. In the US, Canon camcorders go under the Vixia product line; however in the UK and here, they fall under the Legria branding. Thus, Canon USA’s Vixia HF R42, R40, and R400 seem to be the Legria HF R48, R46, and R406 that are announced by Canon UK at the same time.

The most notable change is that these new camcorders are the first Canon Legria camcorders to support the AVCHD Progressive recording standard; that means they can shoot 1080/50p video (up to 28Mbps). For even higher bitrates, they also support MP4 compression of up to 35Mbps. These new models are also the first to be equipped with Canon’s new Digic DV4 image processor.

The HF R48 and R46 come with Wi-Fi support with improved capabilities compared to last year’s models. Users can now monitor and record video remotely using a smart device that has the new CameraAccess app installed. This app is available for both iOS and Android platforms. They also have a Remote Browser function for easier sharing of videos. With it, users can watch videos on connected devices or wirelessly save movies to them. All three camcorders sport a Full HD CMOS sensor, 53x Advanced zoom, and Optical Intelligent IS. Memory-wise, the R48 and R46 have 32GB and 8GB of internal storage respectively, while the R406 uses an SDXC card slot.

Besides the above-mentioned entry-level models, Canon has also updated its flagship offering. The Legria HF G25 (or Vixia HF G20) is the successor to the highly acclaimed HF G10. Equipped with an enhanced HD CMOS Pro sensor, it claims a 20% improvement in light sensitivity over its predecessor. The 10x optical zoom lens has a maximum F1.8 aperture. Another neat feature is Audio Scene Select, which has five different modes with sound settings optimized for the scene being shot. The G25 comes with 32GB of internal memory, and if that’s not enough, there are two SDXC slots. Surprisingly, it doesn’t have any of the progressive and MP4 record modes that the entry-level models have, and neither does it come with Wi-Fi support.
