Update (April 5, 2013): The EOS 100D and EOS 700D will be available in black from end April and mid April respectively.
Canon has just announced two brand new DSLR cameras, the 100D and the 700D. Canon calls the 100D "the world's smallest, lightest DSLR", and is essentially the mirrorless EOS M in a DSLR shell with better battery life. It shares the EOS M's 18MP resolution with an APS-C sensor, Digic 5 processor, 3" touchscreen and 1080/30p video capability, with the Hybrid AF system first seen in the 650D.
The 650D is getting replaced by the 700D, which has an 18MP APS-C sensor with Hybrid AF, a Digic 5 processor and a 9-point cross-type AF system.
Looking at the current line-up of Canon's APS-C DSLR cameras, it seems that the 700D update brings it closer in specifications to the two and a half-year old EOS 60D. The 700D and the 100D are very similar, for US$100 less you get a smaller and lighter camera, but for US$100 more you get better AF performance, a swivel-screen, longer battery life and a slightly faster burst-rate.
While the local prices have yet to be confirmed, it seems that Canon has wisely kept the 100D's price higher than the mirrorless EOS M. However, Canon's previous entry-level model, the 1100D, sold at S$799 (with 18-55mm lens) - if Canon keeps it around then Canon still offers a cheap entryway into its EF mount family. If the 100D replaces it however, then Canon's entry-level DSLR camera has just increased in price US$799.99 (with 18-55mm lens).
Local availability also hasn't been confirmed yet, but both cameras are expected to launch in the US in April.
