Cars that drive themselves are not new. Already, Google, Audi and Mercedes-Benz have prototypes that can drive themselves, with fairly little hiccups, for the past couple of years.

However, self-parking is an entirely different matter. For one, car parks are trickier to navigate and there are sometimes there are no clear rules as to who has the right of way and such. Furthermore, the possibility of obstacles is greater and there are also more people to avoid.

BMW, however, is said to be demonstrating its new self-parking technology a month later at CES 2015. Called "Remote Parking Valet Assistant", the system will use a variety of sensors, cameras and LIDAR scanners to navigate its way around car parks.

On top of that, the car will use its onboard WiFi and cellular connections to look for available floor plans of the car park. This is said to be crucial to reducing processing load and currently Remote Parking Valet Assistant will only work in car parks where it can obtain the floor plan.

And as befits its name, BMW will also work with smart watch makers to produce an app to allow users to use their smart watches to recall their cars when they are ready to leave.

Finally, BMW also said that this technology may be coming soon than expected and might hit the market in the next few years.
