ASUS rumored to launch the ZenFone 4 series in May

The ASUS ZenFone 3 Zoom.

Based on information from sources in Taiwan's handset supply chain, DigiTimes claims that ASUS may launch its next generation ZenFone 4 series in May this year. The Taiwanese company is also said to have set a target of shipping 20 million phones this year.

As ASUS shipped fewer smartphones in 2016 (17.5 million vs. 20.5 million in 2015), the company is estimated to incur losses in its phone business unit. While the last quarter of 2016 saw a turnaround, the first three quarters did not meet the company's sales targets and it could partly be due to late releases of its smartphones in various markets. The recent launches of the ZenFone 3 Zoom and ZenFone AR are likely to boost shipments and earnings for ASUS this year alongside the new ZenFone 4 devices.
