Apple quietly acquires LuxVue, a company specialising in next-generation micro-LED technology

One of LuxVue Technology Corporation's patent applications for Active Matrix Emissive Micro LED display.

Apple has acquired LuxVue, a company that has quietly been working on low power, micro-LED screen technologies, according to TechCrunch.com, who got the following non-committal statement from Apple when they tried to inquire about the purchase: "Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans."

LuxVue itself has stayed fairly quiet over the last few years (they don’t even have a website listed), but VentureBeat reports that they have filed a number of patents for micro-LED technology, which promises displays that are brighter and use less power than current screens.

This could be one of the two dozen companies Apple has acquired in the last year-and-a-half, something that Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook said (in a previous interview) is indicative that the company isn’t shy of buying technology it thinks is worthwhile.

It seems this is another acquisition along lines of Apple taking a controlling interest in companies producing key components for their devices, like chip designer P.A. Semi in 2008 and AuthenTec in 2012, the latter producing the finger-print sensor technology for the iPhone 5S. Could this be the display tech of choice for Apple's future wearable devices?
