With Samsung dominating DxOMark's top 10 list of camera phones in 2015 and the Apple iPhone 6s Plus winning the Galaxy Note 5 by a hairline margin in our own camera phone shootout, it seems that Apple is losing its lead in the tech race. However, KGI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes that the iPhone maker is about to introduce some major advancements to mobile photography with its iPhone 7 Plus.

According to Kuo, Apple is preparing to launch two models of the iPhone 7 Plus this year. While the standard model will come with one rear camera, the second model will sport a dual-camera design. Apparently, Apple managed to overcome initial obstacles in camera module algorithms and integrate technology acquired from its purchase of Israeli camera tech firm Linx in the next generation iPhone 7 Plus.

The dual-camera setup is said to consist of a 12-megapixel compact image sensor from Sony; one will support optical image stabilization and a wider field of view while the other will have 2-3x telephoto lens. The application is similar to the patent application by Apple last year for a multi-camera optical zoom system.

Kuo claims that both variants of the iPhone 7 Plus will be available at launch though the dual-camera variant might be in short supply. As such, it is estimated to account for up to 35% of all iPhone 7 shipments this year.
