Apple Gets in on Indoor Mapping with WifiSLAM Acquisition

 

Apple has recently confirmed with the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) that it acquired Palo Alto based WifiSLAM for about US$20 million. The young start-up company specializes in providing extremely accurate indoor positioning services (via WiFi of course). According to the WSJ report, an Apple spokesperson said that Apple "buys smaller technology companies from time to time," but won't elaborate on the company's plans regarding WifiSLAM. However, WSJ speculated that the acquisition is Apple's way of gearing up in an ongoing mapping battle against Google -- who already has a head start in indoor location services.
