AMD's Mantle Graphics API Adopted by Three More Game Developers
AMD announced another three major game studios have adopted its new Mantle graphics API technology. The studios are working to incorporate the Mantle API into their upcoming game releases.
At Mantle's announcement in late September this year, EA DICE was the first game developer to support this new graphics API in their Battlefield 4 game title. For a quick recap, Mantle allows game developers to tap directly into the hardware capabilities of AMD's GCN-based GPUs and unleash the full performance potential of the GPU in an efficient manner. Now, the three additional game studios are Cloud Imperium Games, Eidos-Montréal, a part of the Square Enix Group, and Oxide Games. Cloud Imperium Games is working on its Star Citizen title. This space simulation game is designed by Chris Robert, who is considered a legend as his repertoire included classics like Wing Commander, Privateer and Freelancer. The upcoming Star Citizen is also unique as it is a crowd-funded game title.
For Eidos-Montreal, in their pipeline is Thief, an action-adventure game of stealth where the player takes on the role of Garrett, a master thief in a fantasy world. Last of all, Oxide Games is designing their new 64-bit Nitrous game engine that will leverage on the processing powers of multi-core CPUs. The three game studios will be joining AMD at the upcoming AMD Developer Summit (APU 13) to speak about their experiences with the Mantle API.
