AMD Hires Former Apple and Qualcomm Senior Engineers

AMD may be trying to expand beyond PC chips with the recent hiring of two senior engineers, Charlie Matar, previously senior vice president of engineering at Qualcomm, who will be joining AMD as vice president of system-on-a-chip development, and Wayne Meretsky, previously technical lead for OS X at Apple, who will be joining AMD as vice president of software IP development.
AMD has stated that both engineers will help the company expand into new markets, but gave no further details as to their specific areas of interest. The hiring of Matar and Meretsky to AMD follows the re-hiring of Jim Keller last August. Keller was previously chief chip architect for Apple and helped develop its A-series processors used in both the iPhone and iPad.
