Acer to bundle Microsoft Office apps on its Android smartphones and tablets

While Microsoft struggles to sell its Windows Phone devices to consumers, it is making progress on bundling its Office apps on Android devices.

Acer is the latest company to join a global partnership with Microsoft to bundle the latter's Office apps on its Android smartphones and tablets. Starting from the second half of this year, productivity apps such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, OneDrive and Skype will be pre-installed on select smartphones and tablets from Acer.

“We’re excited to partner with Microsoft to provide enhanced mobile productivity to our products,” said ST Liew, president of Acer Smart Products Business Group. “By integrating the Microsoft software suite, Acer customers will enjoy productivity on-the-go along with the familiar computing experience on their smartphones and tablets.”

In March last year, Microsoft announced 11 OEMs, including Samsung and Dell, have agreed to install Office and Skype onto their devices. Another 20 (which include big brands like LG and Sony) were added to this list in May. And before this latest announcement with Acer, a similar partnership with ASUS was announced last October. To date, there are more than 1,200 licensing agreements of this nature; and according to ZDNet, the number of hardware makers on the list now stands at 74.
