9 Million Pre-Orders for the Samsung Galaxy S III (Update)
Update: U.K. carrier Vodafone has just confirmed that it has received a record number of end-user pre-orders for the Samsung Galaxy S III ahead of its launch later this month, and according to their spokesperson, the Galaxy S III is the "most pre-ordered Android device we’ve brought into our smartphone line-up to date". Off to a bright start, the Galaxy S III's sale figures looks set to surpass the Galaxy S II, which sold more than 20 million units worldwide in ten months.
Samsung's latest flagship model, the Galaxy S III, has garnered 9 million pre-orders worldwide from more than 100 global carriers, according to an unnamed Samsung executive quoted in a report by the Korean Economic Daily.
The overwhelming demand for its third generation Galaxy S smartphone couldn't have come at a better timing for a company which recently ended Nokia's 14-year reign as the world's top handset maker. For the first quarter of 2012, Samsung sold 93.5 million handsets, capturing 25.4% of the global mobile phone market while Nokia sold 82.7 million phones and had 22.5% of the market.
The Samsung Galaxy S III will start selling in Europe on 29th May, followed by other markets in Asia, U.S and Australia. We previously reported that the Samsung Galaxy S III will be available locally within the last three days of May. Stocks of the Galaxy S III should be sufficient as the Samsung official also mentioned that the company's factory is running at full capacity, producing 5 million units per month.
