HGST has announced the Ultrastar He10 and this is the company’s third generation helium-filled HDD that has a whopping storage capacity of 10TB. Built for high-density storage solutions, the new Ultrastar He10 is meant for high availability data storage needs. According to HGST, Netflix is one of their major customers that leverage on the HDD’s large capacity and reliability to drive its content delivery network.

Surprisingly, the Ultrastar He10 is built perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) technology, which has been the standard for mechanical HDDs for a decade or so. HGST also has another 10TB, HelioSeal HDD but the Ultrastar Archive Ha10 is based on the shingled magnetic recording (SMR) technology that has its inherent disadvantages. There’s also a 8TB version of the new Ultrastar He10, and the drive with both SATA III or 6Gbps, and SAS 12Gbps interfaces. Each drive is available to enterprises as a single drop-in component and it’s back by a 5-year warranty. For more information, do head over to its product page here.
