Samsung Launches New Ultra Series

The original Ultra series mobile phones from Samsung raised the bar on what was perceived as thin for mobile phones. The slimmest of the lot was the SGH-X820, a mere 6.9mm in thickness. Recently, Samsung also announced a trio of 3G Ultra series phones, one each in the candy-bar, fold and slider form factors, just like in the original series. Even before the dust for that has settled, they have gone ahead and revealed three new handsets that will also bear the "Ultra" moniker - the Ultra Music, Ultra Video and Ultra Messaging mobile phones. We were on site during the ITU Telecom World 2006 exhibition to bring you a glimpse of the new Ultra series as well as some other new offerings from Samsung.

Reporting from ITU Telecom World 2006 exhibition - Hong Kong.

From the design of the Samsung office booth, you can tell what their focus is. Besides this image on the side of their stand at the exhibition hall, Samsung put up images of these three new models all over prominent areas at the AsiaWorld Expo and at the airport.

The F300 is the Samsung Ultra Music. The front looks just like an MP3 player, but at the back, this handset has a second display as well as a full keypad. Other specs include an internal memory of 100MB as well as a microSD slot for loading more music.

Samsung decided not to reveal the back of the phone at this show, saving it for CES to happen next year. We were only able to see the F300 as well as the F500 behind clear cases. In this shot we managed to take from the side, you can see that the rear LCD is much smaller than the one in front, and that there's a camera on the top left side.

The Ultra Video is the F500. It looks somewhat similar to the F300 but instead of a single piece, it is made up of two parts which allows the screen to swivel and thus rest on a table for video viewing. This is a 3G handset, unlike the F300, and comes with 400MB of built-in memory as well as a microSD slot. You can see in the mirrored image that the back has been taped up so we can't see the rear LCD nor the keypad.
